Hiring welders from India: what Gulf employers should check

When hiring welders from India, specify the welding process, position, material and code you work to, insist on a practical trade test in the position you need (for pipe work, usually 6G), and verify the candidate's employment history and references. A certificate alone is not proof of current skill; a witnessed test and checked experience are.

Start with a precise specification

“Welder” covers very different skills. A useful job description states:

  • Process: SMAW (stick/arc), GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG/MAG) or FCAW, or a combination such as a TIG root with arc fill.
  • Position: plate positions 1G–4G, or pipe positions 1G, 2G, 5G and 6G. 6G, with the pipe fixed at 45°, is the most demanding and qualifies a welder for most pipe work.
  • Material and size: carbon steel, stainless steel or alloy, with typical pipe diameters and wall thicknesses.
  • Code or standard: for example ASME Section IX for pressure piping or AWS D1.1 for structural steel.
  • Inspection: whether welds will be radiographed or ultrasonically tested, which raises the bar for defect-free work.
  • Setting: shop fabrication or site work, and whether the role includes fitting and reading drawings.

Test in the position you need

A practical trade test is the single most reliable check. The candidate welds a test coupon in the specified process and position, which is then inspected visually and, where required, by bend test or radiography. A welder who passes 6G on pipe can usually handle the easier positions; the reverse is not true. Where you can, have your own engineer or a third-party inspector witness the test in India. We arrange trade tests for every welding requirement.

A well-structured welder test takes about two and a half hours and is scored out of 100, with a pass mark of around 60:

  • Certification and procedure review (15): valid qualification, reading weld symbols, stating the process, consumable and parameters.
  • Preparation and fit-up (25): cleaning, bevel angle and land, root gap and alignment within tolerance, correct tacks.
  • Weld execution (35): correct parameters, consistent travel speed and arc length, even bead, no undercut, porosity or overlap.
  • Visual inspection (10): assessing their own weld and spotting deliberately introduced defects in samples.
  • Safety and housekeeping (15): correct PPE without prompting, hot-work and fire precautions, a tidy work area.

The inspection station matters more than it looks: a welder who can recognise defects in someone else’s work is far less likely to produce them.

Verify, don’t assume

Ask for a welder qualification certificate to the code you work to, such as ASME IX, AWS D1.1 or ISO 9606, then check the candidate’s employment history, the projects they have worked on, and references from previous supervisors. Our due diligence covers identity, employment history, certifications and three layers of references. For Saudi Arabia, many trades also require the Kingdom’s professional or skill verification before the visa is issued.

Fitters and fabricators

Structural fabricators and pipe fitters are tested differently: reading isometric and fabrication drawings, marking out, cutting, fit-up to tolerance and tack welding. If your fitters must also weld, test both skills.

Why India

India’s shipyards, refineries, power plants and structural fabrication yards produce a large pool of experienced welders and fitters. The biggest fabrication and piping clusters include Pune, Mumbai and Thane, Ahmedabad and Vadodara, Chennai and Bengaluru, with refinery and shipyard skills around Jamnagar and Visakhapatnam. We have completed numerous projects for welders, fabricators and pipe fitters for construction and structural fabrication companies in Oman, Qatar and the UAE, and run a regular, ongoing project for welders, fitters and fabricators in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

What welders earn in the Gulf

As a rough benchmark, job-board salary data in September 2026 put welders in Saudi Arabia at about SAR 2,000–4,000 a month gross, and SMAW and multi-process welders in the UAE at about AED 2,500–3,900 (source: Naukrigulf). Pay for 6G pipe welders, coded welders and supervisors is higher. Accommodation, transport and food are usually provided or paid as allowances on top. A competitive package widens the pool of experienced candidates and improves retention.
